'Honduran lawyers work in extremely violent circumstances'
Harald Wiersema, lawyer at NautaDutilh and board member for Lawyers for Lawyers (L4L), gave an interview this morning on Radio 1on why endangered Honduran lawyers are the central theme of the Day of the Endangered Lawyer.
'They are very brave people,' Harald says. 'To guarantee fundamental human rights and freedoms, lawyers in Honduras often risk their life. Getting international attention for causes like these is always important, so that is what we are aiming for today.'
The Day of the Endangered Lawyer is a joint initiative of European Democratic Lawyers and the European Association of Lawyers for Democracy and Human Rights, supported by several organizations, amongst which L4L.
This afternoon, the Day of the Endangered Lawyer Foundation and L4L organise a manifestation in the Peace Palace in The Hague. Furthermore they will submit a petition to the Honduran embassies and consulates in different cities in- and outside of Europe. During a seminar, Harald will speak to Honduran attorney Linda Samanta Morales Madrid about the current situation of lawyers in Honduras.
