Jochem Spaans Partner

Jochem Spaans focusses on project development, industry and climate change. He is specialised in administrative law and environmental law, and heads the administrative law team of NautaDutilh's Real Estate Group. Jochem advises and litigates on complex permitting procedures, spatial planning, (renewable) energy projects (onshore and offshore wind, solar, etc), nitrogen depositions and PFAS matters, and CO2 emissions trading. Furthermore, Jochem has in-depth knowledge of product stewardship legislation affecting the electronics industry, and the legal aspects of the Circular Economy.

Jochem's clients include project developers, national and international businesses active in the ((petro-)chemical and other) industry, energy companies, lenders and (semi-)governments. Next to his advisory and litigation work, Jochem has extensive experience in the administrative law aspects of M&A transactions and project-financing.

Jochem is also an assistant professor at the Department for Constitutional and Administrative Law of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Jochem holds a Ph.D. from this university (2002) on environmental quality standards, having studied both Law and Public Administration. Jochem has written multiple books and articles, and recently published, as a co-author, the latest edition of Hoofdzaken van het bestuursrecht ('Key aspects of administrative law'; Kluwer 2019).

Jochem Spaans was appointed partner within NautaDutilh's Real Estate Group as per 1 December 2019. He was admitted in 2003, and previously worked at a global law firm, heading its Amsterdam Environment & Regulatory team and gaining experience working at its New York office.

Jochem is a member of the Association for Environmental Lawyers, the Association for Building Law, the Association for Environmental Law and the Association for Administrative Law.
