Tomas Vaal is a senior associate in NautaDutilh’s Benelux Arbitration Group. He is specialised in international arbitration under a variety of rules (ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, Netherlands Arbitration Institute, UNUM and the Dutch Arbitration Court for Construction) as well as in arbitration related state court proceedings, in particular regarding the enforcement and setting aside of arbitral awards.
Within the field of international arbitration, Tomas’ focus is on construction disputes (often relating to complex technical issues) and quantum.
Highlights of his work include:
- an international construction arbitration under the ICC Rules between an energy company and a contractor about delay and disruption in a large-scale construction project;
- an international construction arbitration under the NAI Rules between an engineering company and a chemical company about delay and disruption in relation to a project regarding the revamp and increase of capacity of an existing facility;
- an international arbitration under the LCIA Rules between a private investor and a Cypriot company about non-performance under a loan agreement within the context of a real estate transaction;
- a gas price review arbitration under the UNCITRAL Rules between an energy company and its supplier.
Tomas has worked for and represented a wide range of clients, primarily in the energy sector. In 2018, he was seconded to Shell Global Litigation in The Hague, where he worked on a wide variety of cases. Clients describe him as a pragmatic lawyer and a pleasant person to work with. He is further valued for his deep factual knowledge of the case and keeping a close eye on the (business) objectives of his clients.
