Marleen Velthuis

Marleen Velthuis Counsel

Marleen Velthuis is counsel in NautaDutilh’s Corporate crime, Fraud & Internal Investigations team. As a criminal lawyer, she assists companies in investigations regarding environmental violations, violations of the Working Conditions Act and other safety regulations. In addition, she advices financial institutions, accountants and trust companies in criminal investigations regarding alleged violations of the applicable regulation and companies involved in fraud or white collar crime.

Marleen is regularly engaged by corporations, directors and officers to advise and defend in complex criminal investigations that often also are accompanied by administrative enforcement actions. She provided legal assistance to the former CEO of the Dutch National Railways, who was fully acquitted for acting as a 'de facto director' to alleged fraud during a public transportation tender, reached an acquittal for an oil corporation that allegedly violated the waste regulation (EWSR) and provided legal assistance to a global chemical corporation which was acquitted for alleged violation of the safety regulations (Major Accidents Risks Decree).

Marleen graduated the University of Groningen in 2008 (cum laude). She joined NautaDutilh as a counsel in 2018. Previously, she worked nine years at Stibbe. Marleen is recommended in Legal 500. Clients appreciate the professional and at the same time personal approach of Marleen. She understands the highly uncomfortable situation of clients that face criminal allegations. In close cooperation with her clients Marleen ensures that the wrong assumptions of inspectors or the Public Prosecutions Office are being corrected.

Marleen is a member of the Netherlands Bar Association, the Netherlands Association of Defence Counsels, the Environmental Lawyers Association and Women’s White Collar Defense Association.

She regularly publishes on environmental crime in Milieu & Recht, regularly lectures on administrative and criminal enforcement and blogs on the NautaDutilh Compliance & Business Integrity blog.
