'From technology issue to board room issue': Law.com interviews Jochem Hummelen on cybersecurity
In an interview with Law.com, Jochem Hummelen, member of our cybersecurity team, speaks about cybersecurity capabilities in the Dutch legal market. In his view, the demand for cybersecurity legal ad-vice is set to increase as cybersecurity has gone from being a technology issue to a boardroom issue, a question of business continuity even.
The article notes that the explosive growth in cyberattacks and their increasing sophistication in recent years has created a need among large institutions, tech companies and data-drive companies in the Netherlands for legal advice on incident response plans and procedures, as well as ad-hoc legal advice on data breach incident and ransomware attacks. However, most large law firms in the Netherlands do not have the capacity to advise clients on cybersecurity matters.
According to Jochem, cybersecurity legal advice calls for a high level of specialisation. “At NautaDutilh, cybersecurity has been a priority for a numbers of years already”.
At NautaDutilh, cybersecurity is part of our broader Technology Group, headed by Joris Willems, with advice on cybersecurity matters for instance offered as part of due diligence work in a M&A transaction. In the article, Jochem points out the cross-practice approach might be one of the reasons that you don’t necessarily see a cyber security team at a lot of firms, "because it’s a topic that influences all these different practices".
